MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Less than five months before the 2024 election, new statewide polling shows it will likely be another nail biter with President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump locked in a dead heat.

The latest Marquette Law University Law School Poll shows President Biden and the former president tied at 50% among registered voters. Those results shift slightly with Biden holding a two-point advantage over his opponent when surveying likely voters, which falls within the polls margin of error.

However, when it comes to voter enthusiasm, there are some warning signs for the Biden campaign.

Trump has an overwhelming advantage with voters who are 'very enthusiastic' to vote in the presidential race. Meanwhile 65% of Democrats say they are 'not at all' enthusiastic to cast a ballot for Biden.

"Here's a path for Joe Biden to lose this election pretty badly," said Charles Franklin, director of Marquette University Law School Poll. "He's failed to inspire his supporters, there unenthusiastic about him and his campaign."

"This race is a big question about turnout and what matters."

Frankling said enthusiasm could increase over the next few months with the presidential debate airing Thursday, Milwaukee hosting the Republican National Convention in July and Democrats holding their national convention in August.

"Those are things get people to focus on the race," Franklin said. "Debate have rarely shifted the balance, but they haven't always failed to shift the balance. I think it depends on how the debate goes."

In April, the poll found Biden and Trump essentially tied with Trump holding a 2% lead, falling withing the margin of error.

Trump's Conviction

For the first time Manhattan jury found Trump guilty on 34 felony counts in the hush-money trail, the Marquette polls surveyed how voters view his conviction.

When respondents were asked whether they believe Trump is guilty, 55% said they believe the former president is. Thirty-six percent said the conviction was a mistake and views him not guilty.

Forty-two percent of those survey also said Trump should have not been prosecuted, while 8% didn't know enough to have an opinion.

U.S. Senate Race

In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) is ahead 52% to 47% over her GOP opponent Eric Hovde.

The results reflect minimal change from April polling, which found Baldwin with a narrow six-point lead over Hovde among registered voters.
