Tony Monte’ Birchett Sr. (2024)

Tony Monte’ Birchett Sr. (1)

Tony Monte’ Birchett Sr., 50, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 18, 2024, with his devoted wife and partner of 26 years, Debbie, by his side. After a long-fought battle, Tony wins his fight and is finally free from pain, and we are comforted in knowing that he is well in the arms of our Lord. His life was a testament to his unwavering faith, commitment to family, and inspiration to those around him not only by words but by action.

Tony, “Crip” or “TC” as he was affectionately called by friends and family, was born and raised in Baltimore, Md. Tony graduated from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute in 1992. He then pursued his passion for computer science at the University of Maryland at Eastern Shore (UMES), where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1997. During his time at UMES, Tony became a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity – Gamma Xi Chapter (The Rock) in the Fall of 1994.

Tony and Debbie, or “Poppy” and “Pooh” as you would often hear them affectionately refer to one another, met on the yard of the University of Maryland at Eastern Shore. It was here that their dynamic personalities and desire to achieve and seek the best in life fueled a relationship that would turn into a lifelong commitment. Together, they built a love story and a legacy personified by unconditional love and dedication that transcends beyond reasonable comprehension. Tony was so proud of Debbie and her many accomplishments and supported her in her quests for higher learning and self-evolvement. But he mostly admired her for being an amazing mother and his unrelenting caregiver and partner for so many years. Oh, and he always was sure to make sure his “Pooh stayed fly.” Together, they built a LIFE — full of memories, teachings, understanding, forgiveness, a LOT of laughter, tears of joy and pain, and all-in-all LOVE.

This love produced three of the most amazing humans to grace the Earth. The Birchett legacy of Tony Jr. (TJ), Te’mon (Malik), and Treyvon (Trey), were the light of Tony’s life. Tony’s pride in his sons was evident in everything he did. Tony ensured his sons were well prepared for life, always imparting wisdom and offering advice on life skills, from sports to cooking, to finances, and the essential elements of being a man. Tony reveled in watching his sons excel in sports and academics, always pridefully and doting on their accomplishments and ensuring he was front and center at every event possible. Tony Jr. received his undergraduate degree in May 2023 in Criminal Justice from North Carolina Central University in Durham, N.C., where he is also currently pursuing his Master of Science in Criminal Justice (Criminal Investigations) while working as a Loss Prevention Specialist. Malik attends the United States Military Academy West Point with a major in Law and Legal Studies and a minor in Environmental Engineering. He also plays on the Army’s Rugby team. Malik plans to attend law school after graduation in May of 2025. Trey, a rising junior at Bridgewater College, majors in Biology (May 2026) and is a member of the Track and Field team. Trey plans to “research and help find a cure for cancer.” Tony no doubt has left a lasting and remarkable impression through his legacy. He was and will always be so proud of “his boys.”

Tony was more than just a devoted husband, dedicated father, and loving son. He was a youth coach, mentor, surrogate father, advisor, son, uncle, brother, and friend.

He cherished his family and held them close, believing deeply in the power and importance of family bonds. His multifaceted role in those who had the opportunity to experience him will be remembered and missed profoundly.

Faith was a cornerstone of his life, keeping him grounded and hopeful throughout his battles. With the unwavering support and care from his beloved wife Debbie, Tony’s determination never wavered. He remained joyous, full of laughter (and jokes), and continued to love those around him fiercely, never allowing his physical ailments to diminish his spirit or will to fight. So, yes, HE WON THE BATTLE!!

Tony was an employee of 3M Healthcare for the past 20 years. His commitment to his job was unwavering, and he continued to give his all until he could no longer work due to health complications. The support and love Tony received from his colleagues at 3M Healthcare are a testament to his character and the respect he earned through his hard work and dedication.

Tony enjoyed simple pleasures such as fishing, reading, investing, and herbology. He was extremely passionate about encouraging equal rights for all children. Tony’s mission in life extended beyond his immediate family. He was fervent in his passion to uplift, empower, educate, and encourage our youth, especially those of Black and Brown ethnicity. As a member of the NAACP, he was dedicated to ensuring that no one felt less or at a disadvantage due to their skin color. Tony’s determination to support and inspire was a beacon of hope and strength for many young people.

Tony Birchett Sr. leaves a legacy of love, resilience, and unwavering faith. His impact on his family and community will be felt forever. He is now pain-free, having won the ultimate battle, and his spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who knew him.

Tony was preceded in death by his grandmother, Louise Birchett; grandfathers, Thomas Birchett and Francis Hance; father, Thomas Birchett; and uncle, Anton Birchett.

Tony is survived by wife, Debbie Birchett; sons, Tony Jr. (TJ), Te’mon (Malik), and Treyvon (Trey); mother, Amelia Hance; sisters, Lynette Smith and Genilla Smith; nephews, Phillip and Alex; godfather, George Conway; mother-in-law, Allyson Swager; sister-in-law, Sara Swager; brother-in-law, Pete Swager; godsons, goddaughters, and a host of cousins, aunts, and uncles.
