Time zones and time differences

There are 24 regions (Time Zones) around the world with a time difference of one hour. This system has been adopted internationally by setting the total time difference around the world as 24 hours. Further, Daylight Saving Time (DST) is individually adopted in countries and regions.

There are six time zones in the US main country. The 50 US states are spread across the six standard time zones. With dependencies (inhabited and uninhabited), however, the total count comes to 11 time zones.

If we look at a time zone map, we see that the time zone 12 hours ahead of EST is ICT, a.k.a. Indochina Time [Zone]. From north to south, the countries located in the ICT are Russia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, and Indonesia.

Any city in the UK, as well as Portugal, the western coast of africa and really any other country that considers itself in the 0 UTC/GMT time zone will be 8 hours ahead of LA/the west coast of the US.

So why are some cities 30 or 45 minutes off? That has largely to do with the politics in each of those places. For example, in New Delhi, India, they found themselves halfway between two meridians, and therefore decided to be 30 minutes between each, as opposed to adopting one time or the other.

Ideally, time zones would be slices of Earth's surface 15 degrees of longitude wide that keep the same time. However, some countries and parts of countries have decided that being within a specific time zone is not preferable and have chosen offsets of 30 minutes or even 45 minutes.

The country that is 24 hours ahead of the USA is Tonga [1]. Tonga is located in the Pacific Ocean and is in the UTC+13 time zone, making it the first country to greet each new day.

The most likely reason is that the time zone is misconfigured, either because you set it manually or incorrectly. When the wrong time zone is on your phone, even if the automatic time toggle is on and functioning, it will show the wrong time.

Time zones were created because of Earth's rotation. The sun illuminates the Earth, but only one portion at a time. Since the sun can't rise in every part of the world at once, time zones maintain logical order and regulate day and night across the globe.

How to calculate world time? ›

Latitude has nothing to do with determining time on earth. Longitude can allow you to determine time. If you can determine the longitude you are at and know the time at some other longitude, then the difference between the two lets you calculate the time difference (as in time of day).

Alaska is split between the Alaska time zone and the Hawaii-Aleutian time zone.

Russia was divided into eleven time zones in 1919, after the Bolshevik Revolution. Russia is a huge country by area expanding from east to west in the northern hemisphere and therefore, the country felt the need to adopt 11 time zones. The time in Russia ranges from UTC+02:00 to UTC+12:00.

None of the 50 US states have three time zones. However, there are some states with two time zones. These are: Alaska (Alaska and Hawaii-Aleutian)

They are based on longitude and defined by Earth's rotation, which completes a full circle (360 degrees) each day (24 hours). Each hour then, Earth rotates through 360/24 = 15° of longitude: the width of one time zone.

The time zones are mostly full and complete hours apart. So the minutes are the same because we make them match up that way. There are a few crazy time zones where the time is only half an hour different, but for most of them, the time difference is in hours. The minutes are the same.

At the equator, 1-hour time zones are about 1000 miles across, but farther north, the lengths of the latitudes get smaller. Iceland's time zone is only 440 miles across. Even farther north, at Alert, Nunavut, Canada, the timezone is only 135 miles across.

Half-hour time zones

There are a few countries which decided to adhere to this particular time of time zone, such as Iran, which runs on GMT+3:30. India, too, runs on UTC+5:30 (GMT+5:30). Some other examples are Afghanistan, running on GMT+4:30 and Burma, which uses GMT+6:30.
