What goes in a Burger Bowl?

  • Hamburger patties: Obviously! This burger bowl recipe calls for ground beef to make the juiciest pan-seared burgers. Opt for a fat content of 15-20% to ensure the burgers don’t dry out.
  • Fries (or another form of potato): There’s lots of room for customization here. If you’ve got the time and ingredients, a batch of homemade oven fries or roasted potatoes goes perfectly in these burger bowls. However, frozen fries are just as good! Feel free to switch it up and use sweet potatoes or omit the potatoes altogether for a lighter meal.
  • Tomatoes: Cherry tomatoes are sweet and bite-sized, perfect for a loaded burger bowl! If they’re in season, heirloom tomatoes are also a great option.
  • Romaine lettuce: I like to use romaine lettuce for it’s crunch, but iceberg lettuce and mixed greens also work.
  • Caramelized Onion Aioli: Honestly this sauce might be the best part of the recipe. It’s sweet and creamy—perfect for topping our burgers and for dipping fries!

How to make Caramelized Onion Aioli

This Caramelized Onion Aioli is so simple and easy to make. Start by heating a couple tablespoons of olive oil in a skillet and add the onion. Let the onion cook down for about 10 minutes before adding a bit of brown sugar to help caramelization process along. Keep stirring every few minutes until the onion turn a deep golden brown color.

If at any point, the onions look dry or begin to burn, simply turn down the heat and add a splash of water to the pan. They should have a jam-like consistency by the end of cooking.

This aioli is so delicious, I like to make a double batch and use it on everything! On baked potatoes, sandwiches, as a dip for chips and vegetables, salad dressing, etc.

Tips and FAQ

  • Can these burger bowls be made vegan? Yes! Swap out the ground beef for a vegan alternative such as impossible meat or your favorite veggie burger.
  • Can I use other types of meat? Yes! Replace the beef burgers with turkey or chicken burgers. Meatballs also work well. If you don’t feel like shaping the patties, you can also just brown the meat in a pan and drain off any excess rendered fat.

  1. To make the caramelized onion aioli heat the olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. When shimmering, add the onion and a pinch of salt.
